I’m an artist who has always been drawn toward still life subject matter, and especially the mid-twentieth century realist painters who employed simplified forms and varying viewpoints in a single painting. I enjoy bringing rich colors and textile surfaces into my paintings, prints, and collages. With a strong maternal line and influence, the domestic setting and ideas of home are standard in my work. Repeat patterns of textiles, often relief printed, play a part in my compositions. Still life provides not only a means of exploring composition and color, but also to examine the meaning of place, relationships, scarcity and abundance.
Regarding the theme of Re:FRESH, the painting Work Table reflects the time spent alone in my painting studio during the pandemic. The paintings Primm's Table and Flamboyant were made in preparation for a solo exhibit that never happened due to the pandemic, and were literally refreshing two older paintings that live underneath the surface.
