Artist Statement:
This series of abstract paintings explores memory by using digital images as stimuli for existential inspiration. Tapping into my mobile archive ensures previous neurological connection and builds on an existing pathway. It is my hope that these paintings surface viewers’ memories, expanding consciousness of their existence and connectedness as they have mine.
Soren Kierkegaard believed that “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward.” In looking backward at a moment captured in time, I bring it forward to the present while creating. A digital image is first drawn on the panel, then put away…it is both a record of inspiration and the impetus. I intuitively discover line, color, shape, balance, unity, etc. while the work is painted.
Cautious optimism permeates the color palette, urging us to move forward. Shaking the restrictions that bound us to house and home will allow us room to roam. Let these paintings be a prompt for your memories to travel.
